Cannabis Extraction Methods Explained: CO2, Hydrocarbon, Water Hash, and Rosin

Every cannabis vape starts as raw flower and ends as a concentrated oil or extract — the method used to get from one to the other is what shapes potency, flavor, and texture. Here's a plain-English breakdown of the main methods used across the legal Washington and Oregon markets.

CO2 extraction

CO2 extraction uses pressurized carbon dioxide, pushed past its supercritical point where it behaves like both a liquid and a gas, to pull cannabinoids and terpenes out of the plant material. It's popular industry-wide because CO2 is non-flammable and leaves essentially no solvent residue behind, which makes it a reliable choice for tinctures, capsules, and some vape oils. The tradeoff is that CO2 extraction tends to run more processing steps to fully preserve terpenes, so flavor can sometimes come across flatter than other methods unless terpenes are reintroduced afterward.

Hydrocarbon extraction (BHO / PHO)

Hydrocarbon extraction uses butane (BHO) or propane (PHO) as a solvent to strip cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant. Done right, it produces some of the most flavorful and potent concentrates on the market — this is the method behind most resin, sauce, and diamond products, including the base extract in Loot Bar's Cured Resin, Live Resin, and Liquid Diamondz lines.

Hydrocarbon extraction is only legal and safe when performed in a licensed facility using closed-loop equipment specifically engineered for it. Butane and propane are highly flammable, and unlicensed home extraction has caused real house fires and explosions — it's illegal in both Washington and Oregon outside a licensed processor, for good reason.

After extraction, the raw oil goes through purging to remove residual solvent — this is one of the categories checked in the state-mandated lab testing every product has to pass before reaching a dispensary shelf.

Ice water extraction (bubble hash)

This is a solventless, mechanical method: cannabis flower is agitated in ice water, which causes the trichomes — the resin glands that hold cannabinoids and terpenes — to break off and sink, since they're brittle in the cold. The result is filtered through a series of progressively finer mesh screens to separate out plant material, leaving behind a concentrate often called bubble hash or ice water hash.

Rosin pressing

Rosin is also solventless, but instead of ice water it uses heat and mechanical pressure — flower, kief, or ice water hash is pressed between heated plates until the oil is squeezed out. No solvent ever touches the product, which makes rosin one of the more straightforward extracts to trust, though yields tend to be lower than solvent-based methods.
